Course description

This course will consider communication as the foundation for gaining consent. It will give you confidence in understanding what are the requirements for gaining consent. You will be able to reflect on your practice and learn from case examples and discussion.  
This will be an interactive course to learn from one another and improve standards and confidence in practice.

Communication and consent covered
3.5 hours  Communication skills with patients as a foundation for gaining consent. The requirements for gaining consent. The legal history of consent. The procedure for gaining consent. Knowing if you gained consent and recording consent.

  • Understand the Osteopathic Practice Standards relating to communication and consent
  • Gain skills to achieve good clinical standards
  • Recognise skills of good communication as a foundation to good consent.
  • Complete a case based discussion

Course leaders

Deborah Smith

Deborah works as a First Contact Practitioner, and an osteopath in private practice alongside running Mint Practice and being on council at GOsC. Mint Practice provides information and resources to help osteopaths comply with the Osteopathic Practice Standards. Through Mint Deborah has spent a lot of time researching regulations and understanding how to apply them to osteopathic practice.

Sandra Harding

Sandra is a physiotherapist with many years of experience in auditing and training. In 2017 together with Sarah Tribe they set up a business to help physiotherapists comply with the Health Care Professions Council and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy standards and regulations. They have audited and supported clinics on their journey to robust, evidenced governance on many occasions for more than 10 years. https://hcpg.co.uk/ Sandra splits her time between HCPG and being a Board Trustee for POhWER.

Both Sandra Harding and Sarah Tribe are  part of the governance advisory group for MSKReform.
 

Sarah Tribe

Sarah is an experienced physiotherapist who jointly set up  Helping clinics to become HCPD compliant (HCPG) with Sandra Harding In 2017. They have audited and supported clinics on their journey to robust, evidenced governance on many occasions for more than 10 years. https://hcpg.co.uk/. Sarah splits her time between HCPG and being a qualified counsellor.
